#1: What You See Is Not Necessarily  What You’re Going To Get

Just because the hair colour of a certain model on the box dye you laid your eyes on is so vibrant and rich, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to get that same colour payoff when you apply it on your own hair.

Home hair colour kits usually come in a single strong formulation which may or may not work for the natural colour and texture of your hair. It also doesn’t take into account any pre-existing hair colour or your skin tone.

A profesional colour technician will have the knowledge, experience and colour palette needed to mix a colour formulation that will get the real colour result that you desire.

#2: High Risk of Hair Damage

Permanent Hair colour uses chemicals to open up the cuticles, allowing the colour formulation to change the colour of the natural hair.

Home hair dyes generally contain much stronger chemicals than those in profesional colour products. this is because they need to accommodate all types of hair.

The strong chemicals in box dyes can severely dry out each hair strand which will eventually lead to hair breakage, split ends and even hair loss.

It is very unlikely that your hair will need such a strong formulation and can cause unnecessary damage to the hair and profesional will match your hair to the right strength formula in order to limit and manage any damage that may occur during the colour process.

#3:  Inconsistant  Results

Applying an even layer of colour to your hair can be tricky and sometimes results in patches of uncoloured hair or dark bands/spots caused by the overlapping of colour applications.

#6: It’s not real!

Huge product companies are paying top celebrities to endorse their box dyes to the public accompanied with a promise that they will look as good as the person on the box.

In my opinion, home colouring is a false economy. Trying to manage chemically damaged hair will cost you more money in frequent hair cuts and hair conditioning products in the long run.

A change of colour is also very difficult with home colour on your hair. It’s harder to strip out and change, meaning it could be an expensive process going from dark to light or vice versa.

Conclusion

If you want  your hair to look it’s best, home colouring is not the right solution.

Arriving at the salon

It is advisable for you to arrive to your salon 5 minutes before your appointment time as busy stylists will run a column with appointments booked back to back.

All appointment times are structured to allow time for a thorough consultation, shampoo & conditioning ritual, your technical service and the end of service consultation. Should you arrive late, it can effect the timing your appointment and also the stylists other appointments for the rest of the day.

We want your experience in the salon to be as pleasant and relaxing as possible, so allow plenty of time for your journey and finding a parking space.

You can park outside the salon for a maximum of 2 hours before you will have to buy another ticket. If your appointment or visit to the high street is likely to take longer than 2 hours, we advise that you park in the car park at the top of the high street where you can park your car for longer periods.

Dress as you normally would

We want your hair to be manageable and well suited to your every day lifestyle. However because visiting the salon is a relaxing experience usually taken on a day off, it means that you may come to the salon with your hair, make up and clothing totally different from how you usually look.

This is particularly important for guests coming for a hair colour appointment who come to the salon without their usual make up as it can give your stylist totally the wrong impression and could lead to them to choosing a hair colour that doesn’t suit your usual style.

Now, we’re not saying that you have to make an effort for us! But make sure that in your consultation that you discuss this with your stylist so that they can create the perfect style for your everyday needs.

Eat before you come

Sometimes many of our guests do not think about eating before coming to the salon, often forgetting the length of their appointment time.

This could mean that you could go for hours without something to eat and the exposure to strange smells and products we use could result in feeling ill or becoming light headed.

We dont recommend visiting the salon on an empty stomach, but if you do, we can organise getting something to eat from somewhere in the high street.

Ever heard this saying before? Well it’s very true when trying to describe a certain style and colour to a hairdressers.

Well trained and experienced hairdressers are generally very good at interpreting descriptions of styles by guests, but as visual people it always helps to bring along pictures, images or even sketches to show examples of the style you desire.

This will cut out the chance of miscommunication, confusion and will ensure your stylist knows exactly what you are trying to achieve.

Tell your stylist about your hair management routine

A common gripe people have when visiting a hairdresser is that their hair looks amazing when they’re finished at the salon, however they can never quite recreate the look at home.

This usually comes down to 4 things

1. Lack of time
2. Lack of technique
3. Not using the right equipment
4. Not using the right products

Explain to your stylist how much time you usually spend styling your hair and let them know about products & equipment that you use.

When changing your style, be prepared that you may have to invest in the right tools and products to make it easier to recreate the salon look, at home.

You may also have to learn a new technique for styling your hair and with any new skill, it may take time and practice before you get proficient enough to achieve the result.

Think long term

Sometimes your desired result may not be achievable with just one visit to the salon. However, if you discuss how you would like you hair to look eventually, your stylist can recommend a hair regime that will give you the best chance of achieving the look that you want.

Our stylist can advise you on how often you will need to leave your hair in-between appointments, how to look after your hair at home and also how you can evolve your style through the seasons.

Colour service

If you’re having a colour service, make sure that you have completed a recent allergy test before your appointment. Failing to do this means we will not be able to apply colour to your hair.

We also advise not to shampoo your hair on the same day of your colour service, the natural oils in your hair will give added protection to your scalp and skin when the colour is applied.

Be open minded

Our stylists have created many amazing transformations over the years and their experience and knowledge means that they have some great ways of improving the relationship and experience you have with your hair.

You know your own hair better than anyon. Help your stylist by telling them about the problems & struggles that you have with your hair allow them to find the right solution to help you solve them.

Letting your stylist be creative

Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and hairdressers are people with their own individual tastes & preferences.

Hairdressers are usually very good at matching the right style to the right person, however if you go into the salon without an idea of what you want, be prepared that your stylist may create something according to their own taste and perception of your style.

If you want to let your stylist to be creative and do what they think is best, make sure that you make them aware your usual hair styling rituals and how much time you can spend on your hair each day.

Balayage is usually applied freehand, without the use of foil and can be use to create anything from a strong, ‘punk like’ bold contrast in colour to a soft, elegant and natural sun-kissed look.

The Balayage technique can be used in both long and short styles, however for best results we recommend it is used on long hair, below the shoulders.

It has been a popular request in salon recently and there is an ever growing demand for personalised colour as people look for ways to differentiate and create a unique style.

What are the benefits of Balayage?

Compared to traditional colour techniques like full head tints or foil highlights, Balayage is very easy to maintain. This is because you do not get a solid root line when the hair grows out and means you  can leave your hair longer between colour appointments - Perfect if you do not have the time to visit the salon every few weeks to get your hair touched up.

Balayage is also great for people who are having their hair coloured for the first time. Using semi permanent Aveda colour, we can add a new dimension to your hair by creating new tones, adding depth or making your hair more vibrant without you having to commit to colour long term.

How is Balayage applied?

There are many different techniques that stylists use to apply colour to the hair and it can vary depending on your desired result,  colour history and also the length of your hair, but in most cases the colour is applied to individual strands of hair that are picked out by hand.

Some stylists use plastic paddle board to separate and colour the hair whilst other just apply colour freehand with their favourite tint brush. A good stylist will adapt their technique for each guest in order to get a personalised result.

Is Balayage right for me?

The balayage technique looks best when applied to natural hair, however many of our existing guests who regularly have foil highlights are opting for this technique.

In either case, we recommend at least 3 colour appointments based 6 weeks apart in order to build up the initial colour in the hair or blend any existing hair colour. From then on, you may be able to go up to 4 months with applying more colour to the hair.

Is Balayage a fad?

There will always been demand for low maintenance hair colour  and the Balayage technique has been used in salons for decades. We cant see the technique fading out anytime soon, however the styles created using Balayage will constantly change as trends do.

At the moment we are seeing a mixture of styles being created with braver guests choosing heavy dark to light graduations, often finished styles with copper glosses and others going for warm & elegant honey shades.

Maintenance Tips?

Like any other technical treatment that involves applying chemicals to the hair, Balayage can take it’s toll  if it is not applied or maintained with care.

In order for your colour to look beautiful, the condition of your hair must be at its best, so make sure you are using professional, in-salon shampoos and conditioners as well as having regular treatments.

Ask your stylist to prescribe a conditioning regime that is best suited to your hair and don’t be afraid to invest in quality products that can prevent your colour from fading. Buying cheap products is a false economy and will cost you more in the long run by having to come in more frequently to refresh your colour.
